Victoria celebrates 20 years of commitment to the MENA region

The State Government of Victoria is celebrating 20 years of trade, tourism and investment links with the Middle East region.

The Australian state set up its Victorian Government Business Office (VGBO) in 1997 to drive trade and investment links with the region, which two decades later has seen Victoria’s annual exports to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region grow to AUD$ 2.49 billion (US$ 1.85 billion).

Over a 10 year-long period (2006-2016), Victoria’s total exports into the MENA region was valued at AUD$ 29.34 billion (US$ 21.76 billion).

“Victoria has had a long-standing and ongoing commitment to the MENA region which has been established through a sense of deep trust and a mutually beneficial relationship that has been harnessed for 20 years,” said John Butler, Commissioner for the State Government of Victoria in the Middle East, Africa and Turkey.

“There are many countries in the MENA region that have played a vital role in the Victorian economy as both a source of imports and as an export destination. We can only see our relationship strengthening further as we grow even closer together and develop the successful two-way collaboration between Victoria and the region.”

Through a variety of programmes and business initiatives, the VGBO has assisted Victorian exporters and provided assistance to Middle East, African and Turkish companies and organisations to source products and services, business introductions and investment opportunities with Victoria.

Growing Victorian food and beverage exports

The Victorian food and beverage sector is a key component of the Victorian economy and the industry has built a well-established relationship with the MENA region. Each year, up to 100 of Victoria’s top F&B companies attend the annual Gulfood exhibition in Dubai, joining a Victorian Minister who leads the delegation of the state’s high performing companies to the region.

During the period 2006-2016, Victoria exported AUD$ 10.24 billion (US$ 7.6 billion) worth of food and agriculture products into the MENA region.

In the UAE alone, Victoria’s food exports were doubled over the past 10 years (2006-2016). During this period, Victoria exported AUD$ 2.84 billion (US$ 2.1 billion) worth of food and agriculture products to the UAE. The UAE consists of 24% of Victoria’s total exports and 35% of Victoria’s total food export into the MENA region.

“Victoria is a leading exporter of superior food and beverage products with an ongoing commitment to the highest international standards of quality management, food safety and Halal accreditation,” said Mr. Butler.

Diverse sectors and experience

The MENA region is also an important export region for Victorian service providers, particularly in the building and construction sector where companies have established offices in the UAE and beyond.

Education is another important export sector with organisations offering in-country courses and over 6,300 students from the MENA region enrolling in Victorian education institutes last year. Victoria is the most popular Australian study destination for Saudi Arabian students, who account for the largest cohort of MENA students in the state (around 2,900 in 2016).

Strong tourism and aviation links

Tourism and aviation links between Victoria and the region have been enhanced over the years, with Emirates Airline, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways all flying daily to Melbourne.

Emirates Airline has a long-term relationship with Melbourne, having sponsored the famous Collingwood Football Club and the Emirates Melbourne Cup, the flagships among a portfolio of key partnerships in the state.

Etihad Airways also has a strong connection with Melbourne, which is home to Australia’s Etihad Stadium and has seen the UAE’s national carrier become the lead sponsor of Melbourne City Football Club.

“With a vibrant arts scene, a passion for great food and Australia’s leading sporting events, it’s no surprise that Victoria is known for its amazing tourism experiences,” said Mr. Butler.

Fast-growing with significant investment opportunities

Victoria also offers a highly-skilled and innovative workforce across a range of industries, including world-class capabilities in biotechnology and life sciences, carbon trading, automotive, aerospace, defence and ICT.

“Equally, Victoria is a significant destination for MENA exporters and investors,” said Mr. Butler. With direct daily flights into our capital city Melbourne, and a reputation for leadership in Islamic banking, Victoria is an attractive destination for prospective investors into our great state.”

Melbourne’s attractiveness to live and work is underpinned by its position as one of the top cities in the world, as voted by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s annual Global Liveability Report which consistently ranks the Victorian capital as number one.

The city is also the fastest growing in Australia, forecast to overtake Sydney’s population as early as 2030. Melbourne’s population has grown more quickly than any other Australian city over the past 10 years.

BENEFITS OF FORTIFIED MILK HIGHLIGHTED ON WORLD MILK DAY

Milk plays a crucial role in our diet, and is the sole nutrition for newborns. Many of us know that milk is rich in CALCIUM, which is vital for building and maintaining strong bones. However, milk also provides many other nutrients, including Vitamin A, Vitamin B12, Iodine, Riboflavin, Potassium, Magnesium, Zinc, and Phosphorus, as well as high-quality proteins and carbohydrates.

You are never too old to gain the rewards of drinking milk and, when fortified, it ensures you get the vitamins and minerals your body needs. If you love drinking milk, the good news is that you are doing your health a great favor!

So, why is it important to enjoy two glasses of fortified milk daily?

✔ Milk Fuels Your Body by providing you with a powerhouse of nutrients important for healthy bones and teeth

✔ Milk Fuels Your Mind by strengthening your mental performance, knowing that it is a source of hydration and, when it is fortified, it offers the essential vitamins and minerals needed to improve brain health and function

✔ Milk Fuels Your Morning by giving you an energy boost during breakfast time and mid-morning snack to keep you up and running between meals

✔ Milk Fuels Your Thirst, as it’s the second best source of rehydration after water!

Moreover, research shows consumption of milk, cheese and yogurt is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and hypertension, as well as type 2 Diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and colorectal cancer. Consumption of dairy has been also linked with a healthy body weight, and has been shown to play an important role in improving physical performance.

DID YOU KNOW?

People in the Middle East still have vitamin D deficiency at a rate of 86%**!

Therefore, it is crucial to choose the right kind of fortified milk for you and your family.

Your suggested milk choices:

For adults

  • Semi-skimmed or low fat milk, such as KLIM low fat
  • Skimmed or fat-free milk

For children

  • Aged 1 to 3: Specialized growing-up milk, such as NIDO 1+ or NAN 3
  • Aged 3 to 5: Specialized growing-up milk formula, such as NIDO 3+ or NAN4
  • Age 5 and above: NIDO fortified milk

Other types of milk include: soy milk, almond milk, rice milk, and coconut milk.  Among these milk alternatives, choose fortified versions whenever possible.

Young or old, it’s never too late to enjoy the goodness of fortified milk. So make sure to always start your day with a glass, and end it on a milky note!

Portuguese cuisine at Veri Peri Dubai

Craving for some Portuguese grilled chicken? Then head over to Veri Peri who can cook up a storm meaning their flame grilled meat in no time. Veri Peri put their pride in their carefully hand picked sauces ranging from mild to very hot, leaving your taste buds to take the test.

We ordered the chicken picatta from the starters, suggested by the staff and boy were we not disappointed. Thin beaten slices of chicken breast met our eyes, cooked in olive oil and coated with a delicious mixture of beaten egg, mozzarella and parsley – the result – crispy and tender chicken making you yearn for another plate.

The chicken and meat espetadas are a must try with which we chose a side dish of mozzarella tenders.although i liked the former as the pieces of chicken were moist and tender , packed with flavor literally to the bone, we went with the hot sauce to go with it which was a choice we were pleased with.If you are a complete vegetarian, don’t worry about being left out you can also enjoy a vegetarian espetada containing chunks of paneer but maybe we will leave that for next time.

The steak deserves a notable place as we went with the sizzled tenderloin steak, the flavor of the smooth pepper sauce perfectly pairs up with the medium inch steak ,sizzler style leaving you to enjoy the very last bite, the steak is accompanied with mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables.

Another authentic portugese dish we did try was the cataplana which acts as a meal on its own as grilled chicken pieces are met with numerous vegetables like roasted baby marrow, broccoli, baby corn ,carrot and bell peppers all cooked together in a tomato based secret sauce stew form served with rice. I loved every bit of the sauce and wished i had gone slow on the grilled chicken in order to have an enjoyable moment with this dish.

Coming to my favorite part was the chocolate molten lava cake with ice cream. Lets just say, my hubby got to literally only taste the remains. A portion good enough for one, the cake was what i expected to be , moist and fluffy from out and liquid goodness from the interior enjoyed with a dose of ice cream – the perfect way to end my meal on a happy note.

The exquisite Bird cage Afternoon Tea

On a lazy afternoon, how better to spend it than indulge in an afternoon tea experience at La Patisserie located in the lobby of the Sofitel Downtown – With a pretty theme of gold and shades of blue, the lobby lounge makes for a perfect and intimate space, with fresh orchid trees to enjoy a quiet moment with family and friends.

For a welcome treat, we were offered a glass of sparkling date champagne and strawberries with whipped cream along with the uber soft choquette parisiennes, which after giving some insta love, finished chomping on in seconds as the strawberries were downright delicious and croquettes were super crispy.

We tried hard but could not resist the temptations of the the perfectly decorated sweet treats and finger sandwiches , all cascaded on an elegant three tier silver stand crafted with pretty pastel flowers that just added to our bespoke experience as the stand hung delicately in a bird cage style.

As our ever sweet waitress placed all the treats on our tray, we decided to delve first into the tea flavored finger sandwiches ranging from the matcha green tea jam and smoked salmon placed on a toasted scone, touareg tea jam paired with mozzarella and tomato, red fruit tea jelly paired with foie gras placed on a grilled baguette and lapsing souchong tea jam and smoked duck, each of which magically disappeared into our stomachs in seconds, each beautifully crafted by the chefs making it hard to choose a favorite.

The sweet treats, well lets just say, one was just as pretty as the other, making it hard to choose the first, after a quick debate, we dashed for the brightest of the lot, the coconut and mango cake in a vibrant yellow which melted oh so sweetly in our mouth as it was a meld of two of our favorite flavors, next up we tried the peanuts caramel and milk chocolate which had just the perfect amount of crunch with decadent chocolate , the pecan nuts financier and the green tea macaroons were close contenders, but my heart and palette fell head over heels in love with the mango and coconut cake.

An afternoon tea is incomplete without The Scones – as our server neatly lined them on our table from raisin and earl grey scones to plain scones served with clotted creamand strawberry preserve along with condiments, we could not resist how freshly baked they smelt and thoroughly enjoyed with a piping hot cup of jasmine tea and makes for the perfect afternoon treat at just 199 Aed inclusive of an amazing selection of teas and coffee.
